Malt Whisky Yearbook 2018 * When CEO Alexandre Ricard described the results for 2015/16, he used the words “solid and encouraging”. For the fiscal year ending 30 June 2017, he simply restricted himself to “a strong year” and 2016/17 was indeed an improvement of the year before. Sales grew organically by 3.6% and for the first time, the company exceeded the £9bn barrier (£9.01bn to be exact). Net profits increased by an impressive 13% to £1.42bn. The company has divided the world into three markets; Americas, where sales up 7% mainly thanks to a solid performance in the USA driven by premiumization. Brazil on the other hand continues to decline (-2%). Europe was up by 3% and it was Spain (+5%) and the UK (+7%) which was the biggest pleasure beside Russia where sales leapt by 16%. Finally, Asia Rest of the World managed an increase and although China only increased by 2%, it was a huge step forward compared to the previous year when sales were down by 9%. Eleven out of thirteen Strategic International Brand showed growth with Jameson being the star. Volumes of the Irish whiskey increased by 15% to 78 million bottles but also Ballantine´s volumes were more than satisfactory – up by 3% to 80 million bottles. Chivas Regal on the other hand saw volumes slipping by 2% while Glenlivet increased by 2% to 12.8 million bottles. Since 2009, when the company sold Wild Turkey to Campari, Pernod Ricard hasn´t been represented in the American whiskey category. This changed in 2016 when the much smaller whiskey maker Smooth Ambler was acquired to fill the bourbon gap. In summer 2017, another three stills were installed at the Midleton distillery in Ireland thereby increasing the total capacity to 100 million litres. According to the owners this is what is needed to bring Jameson´s volumes from the current 6.5 million cases to 20 million in a decade. Considering the fact that the company sold off Paddy Irish whiskey to Sazerac, it is obvious that focus will be on Jameson. During the year, Pernod Ricard also decided to close down their packaging and bottling plant in Paisley and move the operations to their other site in Kilmalid, Dumbarton, 12 miles to the north. The transition is expected to take place in 2019.*
